At Hadrian Health Centre, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive space for all our patients—including those who identify as LGBTQ+.
We recognise that healthcare isn’t always a level playing field. LGBTQ+ individuals can face unique challenges, from a lack of understanding to experiences of discrimination or difficulty accessing appropriate support. That’s why we’re dedicated to doing things differently.
Our team is here to make sure you feel seen, heard, and supported—not just during your visit, but every step of your healthcare journey.
Changing Your Title or Pronouns
Did you know you can update your title—such as Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms, or Mx—without needing to change your gender? We respect your right to be addressed in a way that reflects who you are.
If you’d like to update your preferred pronouns – like he/him, she/her, they/them – just let us know. We’ll add a note to your medical record.
Changing Your Name
If you’d like to update your name on your medical records, it’s simple. Just complete our Change of Personal Details form online, or visit the practice and ask for a paper copy.
Changing Your Gender
You can request to update the gender on your NHS medical records at any time. You do not need to have undergone any medical or surgical gender-affirming treatment to make this change.
What to Expect
- Updating your gender marker will generate a new NHS number. This is a permanent change and cannot be reversed.
- You will be registered as a new patient, and your previous NHS number will be closed.
- Your medical history will be transferred to your new record.
- If you use the NHS App, you’ll need to set it up again using your new NHS identity.
- NHS England may take up to 4 months to process your request and issue a new NHS number.
- If you change your gender marker again in the future, a third NHS number will be created, and the process will repeat—without linking to your previous identities.
Important Screening Information
Changing your gender marker may affect automatic invitations for routine NHS screenings (e.g. cervical, breast, or prostate cancer), as these are based on the gender listed in your records.
Before making any changes, we strongly recommend:
Speaking with your GP to ensure you continue receiving the screenings appropriate for your needs and sex assigned at birth.
