Mental Health crisis or emergency
A mental health crisis often means that you no longer feel able to cope or be in control of your situation.
You may feel great emotional distress or anxiety, cannot cope with day-to-day life or work, think about suicide or self-harm, or experience hallucinations and hearing voices.
A crisis can also be the result of an underlying medical condition, such as confusion or delusions caused by an infection, overdose, illicit drugs or intoxication with alcohol. Confusion may also be associated with dementia.
Depression
Depression is more than simply feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days.
We all go through spells of feeling down, but when you’re depressed you feel persistently sad for weeks or months, rather than just a few days.
Some people still think that depression is trivial and not a genuine health condition. They’re wrong. Depression is a real illness with real symptoms, and it’s not a sign of weakness or something you can “snap out of” by “pulling yourself together”.
The good news is that with the right treatment and support, most people can make a full recovery.

Mental Health – General Advice
Mental health is sometimes described as ’emotional health’ or ‘well being’. It is an important part of overall health and can be adversely affected by life events, such as the end of a relationship or a bereavement, as well as by mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression.
Mental wellbeing means different things to different people but is likely to involve feelings of being in control, a degree of satisfaction with life, self esteem, optimism, and a sense of belonging.
Mental Health helplines
Whether you’re concerned about yourself or a loved one, these helplines and support groups can offer expert advice.
Mental Health Issues LGBTQ+
Poor levels of mental health among lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people have often been linked to experiences of homophobic and transphobic discrimination and bullying.
Other factors (such as age, religion, where you live or ethnicity) can add extra complications to an already difficult situation.
Mind – For better Mental Health
We provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Every six seconds, a we respond to a call for help.
Every year, we answer more than 5 million calls for help by phone, email, SMS, letter, face to face at one of our local branches and through our Welsh language service.
We’re here 24/7, before, during and after a crisis.
Whether it’s an ‘are you ok?’ at just the right moment, or the midnight support of a trained volunteer; whether it’s better training in the workplace or campaigning for more investment in national and local suicide prevention – we’re here.
Our charity works to make sure there’s always someone there, for anyone who needs someone.
Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide.
